‘Steel Flies’ competition: winning team hails from Darmstadt

The winners of the international “Steel Takes Flight” competition have been announced: David Kemper, Christian Lipp and Alexander Kubsch from Darmstadt University of Technology not only secured first place with their flying machine, but also won the Innovation Prize for a particularly ingenious design of the “aircraft”. Third place also went to the University of Darmstadt, with Team 1 coming out on top. Second place was taken by Team 3 from the University of Dortmund.

The ‘Stahl fliegt’ competition has a long history. The Düsseldorf-based ‘Forschungsvereinigung Stahl’ launched it 19 years ago to highlight, in a unique way, that steel is the ideal material for lightweight construction applications. Since then, mechanical engineering students have taken up this challenge year after year, developing these creative steel aircraft. This year, students from the universities of Aachen, Darmstadt, Dortmund, Kassel, Saarland University and Cairo took part in the competition. The particular challenge was to design and build aircraft that can fly without their own propulsion.
