The deburring press for GIGA or Megacastings is no toy

When you drive into the yard at abk PRESSENBAU, you can sense the spirit of optimism in the air. From January 2024, a new hall is to be built at the company’s site in Mömlingen, equipped with a 65-tonne crane for the assembly of large deburring presses that process so-called Giga or Megacastings – that is, large structural components produced by die-casting.

abk PRESSENBAU and Aulbach Entgratungstechnik have long been tackling the challenges of deburring technology and supplying the global market with tried-and-tested products. These particularly large new structural components open up new possibilities in terms of size, structural engineering and overall equipment.

In conversation with Lisa Aulbach, Ulrich Krimm (Managing Director for Production and Procurement) and André Pfeifer (Technical Project Leader), it quickly becomes clear that the company is successful and aims to grow organically.

How do you deburr large structural components?

“We’re talking here about components with a shot weight of between 80 and 120 kg and an impressive size,” points out Lisa Aulbach, citing the rear underbody (RUB) of a car, which is cast on machines ranging from 6,600 to 9,200 tonnes.

The concept of deburring using a press and tooling is based on a traditional and well-established process found in foundries worldwide. The advantages of punch deburring are obvious: short cycle times, a defined contour cut with adjustable blades and high repeatability, deburring waste disposal via the table breakthrough with return of the recycled material to the melting furnace, and a verifiable straightening effect.

In terms of size and geometry, deburring presses have also proven their worth for such components, but place special demands on the supplier.

abk manufactures this machine type in series production and has now received 17 orders and already delivered 7 presses. Several machines are currently under construction, and the company is in close contact with renowned international customers as well as the relevant suppliers in the process chain. There is already a high degree of standardisation and numerous examples of successful application.

Alongside the large machines, the company has no intention of neglecting the standard range of smaller presses and will continue to offer complete overhauls and comprehensive servicing for all machine sizes in the future.
