SSAB modernises rolling mill stand drives

Primetals Technologies was commissioned to carry out the modernisation work at the cold rolling mill in Hämeenlinna, Finland.

In spring 2023, Primetals Technologies modernised the rolling stand drives on the first stand of SSAB’s four-stand cold rolling mill in Hämeenlinna, Finland. Phase 2 of the modernisation of the rolling stand drives was carried out at the end of 2023, and Primetals Technologies recently received the Final Acceptance Certificate (FAC) from SSAB.
Following the successful modernisation of the rolling stand drives on the first stand of SSAB’s four-stand cold rolling mill in Hämeenlinna, Finland, SSAB has now commissioned Primetals Technologies to carry out Phases 3 to 5 of the modernisation. In Phases 3 and 4, the transformers, drives and motors of the remaining rolling stands will be modernised in a similar manner to Phases 1 and 2. In Phase 5, an obsolete motor is to be overhauled so that it can be used as a replacement for the other motors that have already been modernised. The aim of this extensive modernisation is to ensure the long-term supply of spare parts for the rolling stand drives. This will increase the availability of the tandem cold rolling mill.
