Nowega, OGE and Thyssengas are connecting thyssenkrupp Steel’s steelworks in Duisburg to the planned German hydrogen network and the import route from the Netherlands. The pipelines are due to be operational by 2027, with the connection for thyssenkrupp Steel due by 2028.
As early as 2028, thyssenkrupp Steel’s steelworks in Duisburg is set to be connected to the GET H2 initiative’s hydrogen network, which is to form part of the planned German hydrogen network. The transmission system operators Nowega, OGE and Thyssengas have now signed an implementation agreement with the steel manufacturer to this end. Thyssenkrupp plans to transition steel production in Duisburg to green hydrogen in the long term, thereby reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 3.5 million tonnes per year through the construction of its first direct reduction plant with smelters. The pipelines will link the site in Duisburg-Walsum to the GET H2 network and to the Dutch import routes via the Vlieghuis border crossing point.
The GET H2 pipeline coming from Lingen will be extended via a new 40-kilometre-long pipeline from Dorsten to Duisburg-Walsum, where it will connect to the steelworks. To develop the import route, existing pipelines between Vlieghuis in the Netherlands and Kalle (Grafschaft Bentheim, Lower Saxony), and onward to Ochtrup, will be converted for hydrogen transport and connected to the GET H2 pipeline system. All sections of the pipeline are scheduled to be operational by 2027, with the connection of thyssenkrupp Steel due to take place in 2028.
