Woody appointed as Midrex’s new CEO

K.C. Woody has been appointed President & CEO of Midrex Technologies with immediate effect. His predecessor, Stephen Montague, will continue to serve on the Board of Directors.

Woody, a graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point who served as an officer in the US Army, joined Midrex in 2010 and held a number of commercial roles. In 2020, Woody was appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO), responsible for managing all the company’s commercial and operational activities; since 2023, he has been President of Midrex, the licensee of direct reduction plants.
Midrex considers itself a global leader in direct reduction iron production technology and in aftermarket solutions for the steel industry. As the developer of the Midrex process, Midrex has been designing, building and maintaining direct reduced iron (DRI) plants for more than 50 years. Midrex plants produce around 80 per cent of the world’s low-carbon DRI. Midrex Technologies is a subsidiary of the Japanese company Kobe Steel.
The Midrex process is considered flexible in terms of reducing agent sources, iron oxide feed and product discharge options. The plants can be configured to operate with natural gas, natural gas with added hydrogen (Midrex Flex) and 100% hydrogen (Midrex 2). Iron oxide pellets and lump ore can be converted into either cold DRI (CDRI), hot DRI (HDRI) or hot briquetted iron (HBI), regardless of their Fe content. The plants can be designed for cold or hot discharge at the operator’s discretion, and there are various options for the transport and feeding of HDRI into an electric steelworks.
