Singapore-based Meranti Steel has signed a cooperation agreement with Danieli to set up a new green steel project in Thailand under the Meranti Green Steel brand.
Technology for maximum sustainability
The new complex is to include an integrated DRI and EAF plant with continuous casting and hot rolling capability. The Memorandum of Understanding with Danieli provides for developing renewable energy solutions, including solar and wind power, and on hydrogen technology to achieve maximum sustainability.
The technology provided by Danieli will include an Energiron direct reduction plant and a Danieli Digimelter melting unit equipped with a Q-One power feeder capable of processing green energy. The direct reduction plant is a joint development by Tenova and Danieli. The technology is ready for 90% hydrogen use. Products from the new mill will help flat steel customers and processors reduce their scope 3 emissions.
The thin-slab casting and rolling line of the Danieli QSP-DUE type will provide Meranti maximum flexibility to produce hot-rolled coils (HRC) in a wide range of widths, thicknesses, and steel grades.
Decarbonization of flat steel supply chains
Sebastian Langendorf, CEO of Meranti Green Steel, believes that the advanced Energiron DRI technology will play a critical role in decarbonizing steel supply chains. Local manufacturing will be facilitated by the fact that Danieli has a major workshop in Rayong, Thailand.
Giacomo Mareschi Danieli, CEO of Danieli, commenting on this project: “We are fully aligned with Meranti’s vision and approach to be front-runners in the green steel transition, and we are sure that Danieli’s cutting-edge technologies will allow Meranti to play a leading role in the Far East, flat-product market.”
The new complex, projected for a capacity of up to 2 million t per year of green HRC, is scheduled to start production in the second half of 2027.
