30 percent more jobs in the mechanical engineering industry than in the same period last year were reported to the employment agencies in the first half of 2017. In June 2017, the number of registered vacancies was a good 9’400. However, as only 40 to 50 percent of the jobs for which a new employee is sought are reported to the Federal Employment Agency, the number of vacancies should have been between 23,000 and 24,000

The current high number of vacancies is due to several reasons:

In the first six months of this year, the number of new registrations rose sharply, exceeding the previous year's figure by 27 percent.

For several professions, which are common in the mechanical engineering industry, it has become harder to find a suitable candidate for a vacancy. Above-average vacancy times, according to the Federal Agency for Labor, can be found in occupations of automotive engineering, software development and programming, mechatronics and automation technology, metal construction and welding technology. Currently this also applies to engineers in the field of construction design and model-building.

Due to the high level of employment and persisting labor demand, the number of job changers increases.
