For the first time ever, the “Mireco Decarbonization Award” has been awarded by Mireco together with Horn & Co. Products GmbH. The recipient in the year 2023 was Siegen site of Deutsche Edelstahlwerke Specialty Steel GmbH & Co. KG (DEW), which is part of the Swiss Steel Group.
In the year 2023, by using products made with circular raw materials (CRM) provided by MIRECO and Horn & Co. Products, the company managed to cut emissions of CO2 by more than 10,000 t. This is in comparison to the use of products which have the same qualities but are made only from new raw materials. In 2023, this was the highest rate of carbon reduction (Scope 3 assessment) with regard to the products used by MIRECO & Horn & Co. Products for the manufacture of steel.
At the site in Siegen, large amounts of CO2 emissions are being avoided by using fireproof products with a high recycling rate. The process considers the desired performance and individual needs, which however vary from steel mill to steel mill.
The Swiss Steel Group, who also won the German prize for sustainability Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis, is undertaking great efforts and is not shy of investments when it comes to minimising their carbon footprint.
All recycling concepts by MIRECO, which are based on the ZERO waste approach, create circular raw materials which are mainly used in two material flows:
– CRM for fireproof materials and
– CRM for metallurgical applications.
The metallurgical material flow is mostly covered by MIRECO. For the material flow for fireproof materials, a partner with experience in fireproof materials is necessary, such as Horn & Co. Products. Both material flows reduce carbon emissions, increase independence from supplies from overseas and thereby also prevent landfills.
