Steel industry welcomes outline for a carbon management strategy

German Federal Minister for the Economy Robert Habeck has provided an outline for a carbon management strategy and a related legal proposal to change the law governing the storage of carbon dioxide. According the proposal, the use of CCS/CCU , the transport and and offshore storage should be legalised in Germany.

Marine protection areas are to be excluded. The strategic focus for the use of CCS is on emissions which are difficult or impossible to prevent. CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) stands for the separation and storage of CO₂, CCU (Carbon Capture and Usage) for the separation and usage of CO₂.
The German steel industry welcomes the minister’s plans. “In spite of switching the production to hydrogen and using green electricity, we in the steel industry will have to find a solution for the amount of approximately 5 percent of our carbon emissions that we cannot prevent”, comments Kerstin Maria Rippel, Chief Managing Director of the German Steel Association. She points out that CO2 separation, storage and usage (CCS & CCU) will be indispensable here. “To do this, we need the right framework conditions and the necessary infrastructure – the draft paper presented today is an important first step, which we welcome”, says Rippel.
