Producing all kinds of steel with electric furnaces
A study by the British steel association UK Steel explains how electric arc furnace technology (EAF) can be used to produce all kinds of steel and steel products, by controlling the mix of raw materials.
The study states that steel manufacturers are overcoming previous challenges in production through technological progress and through adding different amounts of pig iron or direct reduced iron (DRI) to the EAF melt. This dilutes the residue from steel scraps and significantly expands the range of products. Further, strict control of the scrap feed and improved technology within scrap sorting have demonstrated that undesirable parts cannot end up in the material used for the EAF. According to UK Steel, this strongly improved capability within EAF production has caused European and North American steel producers to invest in EAF production and make the switch. This allows the use of recycled steel, which significantly reduces product emissions and lessens the dependency on imported raw materials. Source: British Steel
