A modernized slitting line from Primetals Technologies has been commissioned at the thyssenkrupp Rasselstein steel mill in Andernach. The modernization comprised the Level 1 automation system including visualization and the drive system of "Shear 1".
Several aspects were important for thyssenkrupp Rasselstein when selecting a supplier. The decision was made in favor of Primetals Technologies because the company could offer a standardized and adaptable automation solution that minimized downtime and ensured full production just three days after commissioning. The proven automation solution and good experience from another recent project execution were two other decisive factors in the choice of supplier.
Simplified operation through new technologies
Primetals Technologies had responsibility over the engineering, project management and implementation of the new solution. The standard software solution of the basic automation of treatment lines was adapted in the engineering phase, to the needs of thyssenkrupp Rasselstein. The result is all-in-one software for all relevant automation and technology functions, including motion control, sequencing with support functions, material tracking, diagnostics, data management and auxiliary control functions. Primetals Technologies also supplied thyssenkrupp Rasselstein with new AC and DC drives, a hydraulic drive control system and a software - safety solution for the operation of the "Scissors1".
The project includes a state-of-the-art visual operator interface featuring an intuitive design and advanced diagnostic functions. The new system facilitates operation of the slitting line. In addition, maintenance work can now be carried out even more efficiently due to the significantly improved diagnostics for the slitting line.
Thanks to the modernization, thyssenkrupp Rasselstein can count on higher availability of "Schere1". As the line now meets the latest standards, ensuring a sufficient supply of spare parts will also be much easier in the future.
Founded in 1760, thyssenkrupp Rasselstein produces tinned or specially chromium-plated sheet in thicknesses from 0.100 to 0.499 mm. Over 90% of the steel is used in the packaging sector, but the material is also used in the automotive and electronics industries. Today, the company supplies around 400 customers in 80 countries, making it one of the largest packaging manufacturers in Europe.
