Forward-looking: Recycling used sand secures the future of the foundry location
Heinrich Wagner Sinto Maschinenfabrik GmbH (HWS) is one of the leading international suppliers of machines and systems for the foundry industry and part of the Sintokogio group of companies with headquarters in Japan. The company employs more than 300 skilled workers at the Bad Laasphe location. The focus is on the production and sale of molding machines and molding systems as well as casting systems for sand and die casting. The portfolio is supplemented by machines and systems for the mechanical recovery of used sand in green sand foundries.
Mechanical reclamation by friction - USR-II
The HWS sand recovery system type USR-II (Ultra Sand Reclaimer), with a processing capacity of up to 5 tons of used sand per hour, with one aggregate, forms the heart of a HWS sand recovery system for green sand foundries. It offers efficient cleaning based on a friction process with high flexibility in terms of used sand composition and quantity. The process can be individually adjusted with a view to a high regrind yield (ratio of the amount used to the amount output) for both simple and sophisticated used sand. An important feature is the gentle friction from grain to grain, without additional reaming tools (see Fig. 1). This largely prevents grain breakage and keeps wear on the sand grain to a minimum.
HWS test facility for sand regeneration
In its in-house test facility, HWS offers interested foundries the opportunity to convince themselves of the efficiency of used sand regeneration. With the USR-II machine in a near-series version, recultivation tests can be carried out under conditions close to production. The focus is on determining the suitability for complaints and the process parameters for the design of an entire system.
Recovery of used sand instead of landfilling
Is the recovery of used sand a real alternative to landfilling? Many foundries have to ask themselves this question. With appropriate suitability, individual concept planning in collaboration with the process supplier and an economic viability assessment for the overall investment, recultivation can be a real alternative. A sustainable cost reduction must be guaranteed.
Other effects, such as the conservation of natural resources and the improved CO₂ balance of the system, also contribute to greater sustainability and should be taken into account when making decisions regarding investment approval. Recultivation must already be included today in the strategy to secure the long-term future of our foundries in Europe. With its own recultivation process and its own technical center, HWS offers a full service to successfully address this issue.
