22/06/2009
Posco-Mexico`s CGL (Continuous Galvanizing Line) began a hot run, or commercial operation, on June 4. Posco started building the CGL in September 2007 in the vicinity of Altamira Port in Tamaulipas, which is in eastern Mexico. The construction is scheduled to be completed on June30. The plant in Mexico will be Posco`s first overseas base from which it will supply quality automobile sheets. With a relatively cheap labor force, Mexico has attracted global automakers like GM, Volkswagen,Renault, and Nissan as well as more than 1 000 parts suppliers like AutoTech and Benteler. The nation currently produces 2 million cars a year, playing a crucial role as a Mecca of the North and Central American auto industries. With the completion of the CGL in Mexico, Posco will have the capacity to produce 400 000 t of steel a year in the country. By supplying quality automobile sheets to North, Central, and South America, Posco will strengthen its status as a competitive global auto sheet supplier.
