Spanish Casting Output in 2008 at over 1.2 Million Tons

Production down in terms of value and volume. Passenger and commercial vehicles by far the biggest outlet for cast parts.

According to statistical data provided by the relevant Foundry Association, the Federación Española de Asociaciones de Fundidores (FEAF) headquartered in Bilbao, Spain’s casting output amounted to 1,202,555 tons in 2008.


The major share was accounted for by cast-iron parts with 82.8%, followed by NF-metal castings with 10.2% and cast steel sections with 7%. The by far biggest group of buyers in 2008 was passenger car and commercial vehicle producers with a share of 57%, followed by valve/pump/hardware/fittings producers with 13% and wind power with 7%.

All in all the Association represents 125 foundries with 15,781 employees and a turnover of € 2.529 billion in 2008. Exports accounted for 54.2% or 651,715 tons of total production. Compared to 2007 posting 1.433 million tons in total and a production value of € 2.848 billion (CAEF data) Spanish casting output is down by 16.1% in volume and by 11.2% in value. Established in 1997, FEAF is composed of the Association of Foundries in the Basque Country and Navarra (NAFV) and the Association of Catalan Foundries, the two focal regions for the Spanish casting industry.
